Kitesurf Australia - an historical look from 2007 to Now!

As we make the big move from the little blue shop on the Noosa River to our new Main Road, even brighter blue shop front, we have taken the time to reflect on the eight (8) years since 2007, when the Tarr family took over the iconic Kitesurf Australia shop.

The shop was established by well known local Chris De Aboitiz (Keahi's dad) back in 2001 after the initial introduction of the kiteschool in 1999. Now known as Adventure Sports Kitesurf Australia, the shop has weathered local floods, the wettest summer in decades, the GFC and so much more.

We just wanted to share some of the history in a photo gallery we have put together. Check out a few blasts from the past including the Coolum Kite Festival, trips to Fiji, the introduction of SUP, old logos on old cars, new vehicles, shop renovations and insights into our family as Liam has grown up, Simon has finished school to take on the family business and new, exciting staff have joined in.

As we reflected on the past, we were reminded of the heart and soul of why we do what we do. The kitesurfing community and now the SUP and Skate community are what makes doing business, more like just having fun. Thanks to everyone who has helped us along the way. Take a look at the photos, you might even see one of yourself.

Join us on the 17th June for our first day at 136 Eumundi Rd, take a look around and join in our excitement. A proper 'shop' warming will be held later in June or early July, so stay tuned for details. Final day of trading at Gympie Tce will be next Saturday the 13th June.

Check out the photos here.

SUP Paddle Adventure

We could not have asked for a more perfect afternoon to take on our first SUP Adventure Social Paddle. The water was smooth and the scenery was pristine.

A small group of paddlers made their way from the back of the AFL park, along Creek Rd and paddled through the estuary behind the Noosa Sound, ending up at the Lions Park at Noosa Heads. We made great time and almost regretted finishing the paddle in only one hour.

We are already planning our next SUP Adventure, but first, we will have our next full moon paddle which will be early in July. Follow us on Facebook to make sure you don't miss an event.

Check out a few photos from the paddle on Flickr. More coming soon. If there is a photo of you, please feel welcome to download it or share this post on your own Facebook page.

See you next time.

Adventure Sports is on the Move in Noosa

It is going to be the end of an era people. No, don't panic, we are not closing, but we are moving house! Our 'Tardis' blue box on the Noosa River has served us well for many years. From its humble beginnings with Chris De Aboitiz back in the early 2000's to now, we have slowly expanded our boundaries as you guys have supported us (thanks for that by the way), but our little shopping centre is now very busy and parking and access along with ceiling height and space in general are getting in short supply.

So...... Welcome to our soon to be, new home: 136 Eumundi Rd Noosaville is undergoing a face lift and we will be all settled in by late June. Watch the renovations via Facebook as we paint, signwrite, clean, carpet, fit out and transform this abandoned warehouse into our new home.

Now..... We have one favour to ask in order to make the moving process easier. There are some stock items we are looking to clear or reduce as we relocate so we are offering some huge discounts on clothing, shoes, snorkels, pool toys, sunnies, wetsuits, PFD's, accessories and so much more. Check out the savings:

T shirts all $25

Boardies all $40

Globe & Cobian Thongs all $20

Hive Swimwear all $30 a piece

For the month of May, all wetsuits, boogie boards, Keens Footwear and Clothing will be on clearance, so come in, take one last look at the old shop & grab a bargain!

Don't forget, stay tuned to check out the renovations and fit out as we go. The staff are all super excited and we are looking forward to our 'shop' warming party coming soon.

Take a look at an old photo of Liam and our little shop on the Noosa River, back in 2007.

Keeping It Local - and the Winner Is!

We didn't really want to call either of these 'give-aways' a competition because it was never about competing at all, and it certainly wasn't an out the hat draw. Yet someone has to be the 'winner' or the recipient of these gifts and it is now time to let everyone know who!

SUP Give-away!

A local SUPper kindly donated one of his pre-loved boards and set the criteria for the give-away. After a short consult with the current owner, we have found our lucky new owner. You will surely see him eagerly testing out his Coreban Nitro 8'5 on the local waves. James has been so dedicated to SUP that he has been using old windsurfing boards to get the job done. Well now he can get out on the real thing and we all hope he goes nuts on the his new board.

Grom Kitesurf Give-away!

We made the application process for this give-away pretty challenging on purpose. With over $600 in lessons & a good quality used set up valued in excess of $1800, this was a pretty substantial gift. Applicants couldn't just put their hand up, they had to tell us why they really wanted to learn to kitesurf and in an interesting way. This set up was destined for a really passionate grom.

We are super happy to offer Alice a chance to complete her 'learn to kitesurf' journey. Alice started lessons with us a while back, but couldn't quite make the leap to get her own gear and progress. We will be tracking Alice's progress on Facebook so stay tuned to see how she goes in the coming season.

Winter Escape with Adventure Sports

We know, it is still lovely and warm here in Noosa, but winter is on its way. This year, with the weaker Aussie dollar, we have decided to keep our holiday here in Australia. So, we will be heading to Yorkey's Knob for a week, followed by a 4 day safari to Cape Flattery.

Cape Flattery has a reputation for offering 20-25knots 24/7, along with shallow flat water. Perfect for some solid progression. Spaces are limited, only 2 spots left now, so bookings are essential. For more details, call the shop on 0754556677.

We will be taking additional demo kites from our current range, along with some demos from the dealer meetings which will be happening in June, so a few smaller kites will be available if required.

Yorkey's Knob offers winter wind and we have access to a number of beach front apartments from $75 a night. Progression Clinics and private instruction will be available at additional cost, along with day tours to SUP the local rapids if there is no wind.

Keeping it Local

Every year as a small business we get asked to donate to loads and loads & it seems an ever increasing list of loads of charities.

Now we have sponsored many of them over the years, but a lot of the money donated goes to administration costs for these charitable organisations and we have been thinking (I know dangerous but) there must be a better way.

So, we would like to offer a local young person (under 18) the opportunity to learn to kitesurf FREE, along with a FREE used set up. Application is open to anyone aged between 15-18 years.

All nominations need to be by the nominee (the young person themselves). Submissions can be a video, audio, in writing or in person (instore). Tell us why you want to learn to kitesurf, what other sports you enjoy, what you like or don't like about school and anything else you think we should know.

Nominations close 30th March 2015

Extended until the end of April School Holidays

Liquid Force Foil Board - Put to the test!

George has recently been testing the new Foil Board from Liquid Force. It certainly has awesome upwind ability and seems to work well on a variety of kite sizes. He is mastering the technique and will be offering lessons or running a clinic later in the season.

The skim fish board is easily detached and makes a great alternative for light wind or unstrapped riding progression and many intermediate riders have found it quite easy to use.

For more information - check out this onlilne brochure from Liquid Force

Five Ways for Kitesurfers to Avoid the Wind Drought Doldrums

We have had a little wind drought in Noosa; by that I mean a few days without strong wind (the locals are a little spoilt at times). It looks like the change of season is coming with SE winds predicted very soon. Instead of getting all depressed about the wind doldrums, why not take this opportunity to do one or all of these little alternatives:

  1. Do something interesting and fun with the family/partner to clock up a few brownie points for when the wind is back. You know; SUP, surf, hike, a day at Dreamworld..... Or maybe take on that project your partner has been bugging you about for ages.
  2. Check your gear over. Is there a 'bodgy' little repair you did while the wind was honking and you can now send it away for a professional repair?
  3. Add a 'no wind' option to your repertoire so that on days like this, you can always have a fun alternative. SUP, surf, kayak, skate..... All great options.
  4. Watch DVD's - Check out some of the wave kiting DVD's or a DVD on new tricks ready to try when the wind is back.
  5. Last but not least....plan your winter escape now. There are some great options available this winter, including our Fiji Trip which will be on again this July/August.
